What does Share Focus Status mean?

iPhones contain lots of customization features, and Focus mode is one of them. With Focus mode, you can limit notification alerts during busy periods. There's also an option to Share Focus Status, meaning that contacts receive an automatic message when you have it enabled. The message tells contacts that you have notifications silenced.

How does Share Focus Status work?

When you turn on Share Focus Status, the iPhone automatically notifies anyone who tries to text you about your unavailability. Contacts see a message that you have notifications silenced or that you're in Focus mode so they'll know you have focus mode on and aren't simply ignoring their messages.

iPhone users can customize their settings to allow certain contacts to reach them even when Focus mode is turned on. For instance, a user might want to keep receiving texts from their boss. Anyone not on the list gets the unavailable status message.

If there is an emergency, contacts can bypass Focus Mode by choosing Notify Anyway. That option appears after sending several texts in a short period.

When you enable Share Focus States in iMessage, contacts see that you have focus mode on.

How Share Focus Status affects notifications

Contacts who try to reach out when Share Focus Status is on see a message that your notifications are silenced. They won't know any other details about your Focus mode setup, such as its schedule or which mode you're using.

Why can't I share my Focus status?

The option to Share Focus Status is grayed out if you don't turn on the Share Across Devices option. To turn on Share Across Devices, open the Settings app. Tap Focus > Share Across Devices. You should be able to use Share Focus Status afterward.

Does sharing Focus status drain the battery?

It conserves your battery since you won't receive most notifications or actively engage with your phone. Using Focus mode itself has little impact on the iPhone's system resources.

How do I disable Share Focus Status?

To disable Share Focus Status, open the Settings app. Tap Focus > Focus Status. Tap the option to toggle off Share Focus Status. A gray button indicates it's off.
