How to take a screenshot on any iPad model

See a funny meme on your iPad® you want to share, post, or save? Screenshots are one of the best and quickest ways to do that. Whether you have an iPad model with a Home button or not, taking a screenshot is a fairly simple process once you know the steps.

At Asurion, our tech support helps customers daily, especially when it comes to getting the most out of their iPad features, like the iPad Pro camera and iPad split screen. To learn how to take a screenshot on iPad, check out the guide below.

For iPads with a Home button

A Home button is a small, circular button located at the bottom of the iPad. If your iPad model has a Home button, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Home and top buttons simultaneously.
  2. Quickly release both buttons.
  3. You’ll see a thumbnail appear at the bottom left of your screen to indicate that you have taken the screenshot.
  4. You can either swipe left to remove it from your view (without deleting it) or tap the thumbnail to edit the screenshot.

For iPads without a Home button

Some iPads, especially those released after 2018, lack a Home button. These include the 2020 iPad Air and the 2020 and 2018 iPad Pros. Here’s how to take a screenshot on iPads that don’t have a Home button:

  1. Simultaneously press the top button and one of the two volume buttons.
  2. Immediately release both buttons.
  3. If you see a temporary thumbnail appear in the lower-left corner of your iPad’s screen, you have successfully taken a screenshot.
  4. Tap the thumbnail if you want to edit the screenshot, like crop it or draw on it. You can also remove the thumbnail from the screen by swiping left.

Taking screenshots with Apple Pencil

Some iPads—like the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini—are compatible with Apple Pencil, which you can use to take screenshots on your iPad. Using an Apple Pencil will work the same way whether your iPad has a Home button or not. Here’s how to take a screenshot on an iPad with Apple Pencil:

  1. Make sure your Apple Pencil is connected and set up with your iPad.
  2. Go to the page you want to capture and use the Apple Pencil to swipe up diagonally from either bottom corner of your iPad toward the center of the screen.
  3. The screenshot will automatically appear on your screen in Markup view. This allows you to edit the screenshot, like drawing on it with the Apple Pencil.
  4. Tap the Done option if you’re satisfied with the edits.

Editing and saving screenshots

When you take a screenshot on your iPad, the thumbnail only appears on your screen for a few seconds. This automatically saves it in your Photos app. If you want to edit the screenshot:

  1. Tap the thumbnail before it automatically disappears.
  2. Once you tap it, the screenshot will appear in Markup view, which gives you the option to crop, highlight, add text, or draw on it.
  3. Save the screenshot by tapping Done in the upper left corner of your screen.

NOTE: You can also edit the screenshot from the Photos app.

FAQs

Where are screenshots saved on an iPad?

Screenshots on your iPad automatically save to the Photos app unless you choose to save them as a PDF.  If you just took a screenshot, it will be the most recent photo you see in the Photos app. To see all of your screenshots in one place, go to Albums, then tap the Screenshots folder in Media Types

How do I edit or share screenshots after taking them?

After taking a screenshot, you can tap its thumbnail to open it in Markup view. In the top-right corner above the screenshot, you’ll see an icon that looks like a box with an arrow on top of it. Tap it and choose the option you want, such as sending it in a message or saving it in a document.

Can I take scrolling screenshots on an iPad?

Yes, you can take a scrolling screenshot that captures more than the view on your current screen, like a long article. To do so, take a screenshot on your iPad as you would normally do, then tap on the thumbnail that appears on your screen. Tap the Full Page option, then Done. You can save your screenshot as either a photo or a PDF.
