Data Reveals Summer Is the Peak Season for Phone Mishaps

Asurion data shows summer brings a surge in lost phones, water damage, battery issues, and cracked screens — with July 4th weekend remaining the riskiest time of the year for tech

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — June 22, 2026 — Summer travel is in full swing, and so are the risks to your favorite tech. Last summer, tech care company Asurion® saw insurance claims for lost and damaged phones increase 22% during the summer months compared to the rest of the year, as more people brought their devices to pools, beaches, lakes, vacations, and other summertime adventures.

Among the biggest trends Asurion saw last summer:

  • Liquid damage incidents jumped 71% as phones took unexpected dips in pools, lakes, and oceans.
  • Lost phone claims increased 24% during the busy travel season.
  • Battery-related issues rose 44%, as summer heat and heavy use took a toll on devices.
  • Cracked screen accidents climbed 11% as more time outdoors led to more phone fumbles.
  • July 4-7 saw more phone claims than any other stretch of the year, marking the holiday weekend the most dangerous time of year for phones.

Smartphones weren't the only devices feeling the heat. Last summer, Asurion also saw a 5% increase in claims for laptops, tablets, game consoles, and other tech during the summer months compared to the rest of the year.
