You're in your living room, trying to vacuum up a few leftover crumbs from your toddler's latest snack. But instead of sucking them up like it's supposed to, your Dyson leaves them sitting. What's behind Dyson's lost suction?
Asurion Experts keep your favorite home devices running smoothly. From deciphering error codes on your washing machines to explaining why appliances fail, we offer solutions you can trust. Here's what to do if your Dyson vacuum is not sucking.
Empty the bin and check the fit
There's an easy way to find out if your Dyson's bin is full. Check whether the contents exceed the MAX line. If they do, release the bin from the vacuum and take it to the trash. Pull the lever to empty the bin, then reseat it securely in your vacuum. You should hear a click when it's positioned correctly.
Check for blocked airways
If your Dyson vacuum has no suction after emptying the bin, there may be an internal blockage or clog. This can happen in a few places, including the wand, hose, or cleaner-head inlet.
Start with the cleaner-head inlet. It's located on the bottom of your device and is often the first place to collect a blockage. You can access it by removing the brush cover. This may pop open with the help of a coin or screwdriver. Take out the roller and look for anything blocking the inlet, such as small objects or clumps of grime.
Most Dyson vacuums have attachments, such as wands or hoses, that you can use to vacuum crevices, furniture, and walls. Detach the wand from the hose and use a flashlight to take a peek inside. You can unscrew the hose and check it, too.

Clean and refit the filter
If your Dyson is not sucking, it may have a dirty filter. Take these steps to clean it:
- Gently remove the filter from your vacuum.
- Tamp out any debris into a trash can.
- Use cold water to clean the filter. There's no need to add soap or cleaning agents.
- Fill the filter with warm tap water and cover both ends with your hands. Shake gently to dislodge any remaining dirt.
Make sure to let the filter dry for at least 24 hours before reinserting it into your vacuum. Trying to use it when it's wet attracts more dirt, making clogs worse.
Dyson recommends cleaning the filter at least once a month. Deep cleaning your gadgets regularly can prevent bigger maintenance issues from evolving.
Clear the brush bar and check the floor setting
Poor debris pickup is different from weak airflow. If your vacuum is failing to suck up small items, there may be something clogging up the brush head, not a blockage in the filter, bin, or attachments.
To fix this, lay your vacuum on the floor and check the brush area. Unscrew the cover (or pop it open), and look for any visible obstructions. Gently remove any clogs you see from the brush. Scissors are a big help here, especially for hair and fur.
Also, make sure you're using the right head and floor setting for the area. A head designed for carpet will work differently from one made for wooden or tiled floors.
Some Dyson vacuums have a different setup than others. For example, if you have a Dyson Ball that's not sucking, you'll want to check the brush roll for debris.
When your Dyson may need a repair
If cleaning your vacuum's attachments, brush, and hose don't resolve the suction problem, it may be time to repair or replace your appliance. If you're unsure whether buying a new one makes sense, consider the age of your vacuum, its cost and condition, and whether you have a warranty. Sometimes, repairs are cheaper, especially if you can find a qualified technician and the right parts.
FAQ
Why is my Dyson working but has no suction?
If the motor's running, but your Dyson's lost suction, check for blockages in the wand, hose, or cleaner-head inlet. You can also try cleaning the filter and securing the bin.
Why is my Dyson not suctioning from the bottom?
There may be something blocking the cleaner head. Open up the brush compartment to check for built-up debris, hair, and other clogs.
Why is my Dyson still not sucking after cleaning the filter?
Attachment obstructions can stop your Dyson from sucking. Also, make sure you let the filter dry for at least 24 hours before reinserting it into your vacuum. Follow up with a technician if these fixes don't work.
