Fire tablet won’t install apps? Here’s why
⚡ Fast fix
- Check storage first. A full tablet won’t make room out of kindness.
- Restart the tablet. Stuck downloads often need a clean start.
- Check Wi-Fi. App installs need a stable connection.
- Look at parental controls. Kids profiles can block downloads.
You tap install on your Amazon Fire® tablet and wait. Then wait some more. Maybe the app sits at “pending,” maybe it fails, or maybe the Appstore acts like the button was merely a suggestion.
Asurion Experts help troubleshoot tablet app issues all the time, and app installs can usually be narrowed down to a few fixable causes. Here’s how to check the usual suspects and get apps installing again.
Why won’t apps install on my Fire tablet?
A Fire tablet may not install apps because there isn’t enough storage, the Wi-Fi connection is unstable, the Amazon Appstore is stuck, the tablet needs an update, the account has a payment or region issue, or parental controls are blocking downloads.
The fastest path is to check storage, restart, and confirm Wi-Fi before digging into account settings. Basically, start with the stuff that doesn’t make you reset your whole afternoon.
Check your storage
Apps need room to download, unpack, install, and update. If the tablet is nearly full, an app may fail even if it looks like there should be just enough space.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Storage.
- Review how much space is available.
- Remove unused apps, downloads, videos, or audiobooks.
After freeing space, restart the tablet and try the install again. Our article on freeing up storage on a Fire tablet walks through what to remove first without accidentally deleting the good stuff.
Restart your Fire tablet
A restart clears stuck downloads, background processes, and temporary software glitches.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Tap Restart if it appears.
- If the tablet won’t respond, keep holding the button for 20–40 seconds.
- Wait for the tablet to restart fully.
- Reopen the Appstore and try again.
Our guide to common Amazon Fire tablet issues covers restart steps for frozen screens, app problems, charging issues, and other Fire tablet weirdness.

Check Wi-Fi
A weak or unstable connection can leave app installs stuck on pending or downloading forever. Try this:
- Move closer to your router.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
- Restart your router if other devices are slow too.
- Forget and reconnect to the Wi-Fi network if needed.
- Try installing a smaller app as a test.
If web pages load slowly or streaming buffers on other devices, the app store probably isn’t the villain. The Wi-Fi connection may need the first fix.
Make sure the Amazon account is correct
Apps are tied to the Amazon® account signed in on the Fire tablet. If you’re using the wrong account, a child profile, or a restricted profile, downloads may not behave the way you expect. Check the account:
- Open Settings.
- Tap My Account or Your Account.
- Confirm the signed-in Amazon account.
- Check whether the tablet is using an adult profile or child profile.
- Try downloading the app again.
If the app is paid, confirm the payment method is current on the Amazon account.
Check parental controls and child profiles
Parental controls can prevent app downloads or require approval before installation. That’s the point—but it can still be confusing when you’re the adult trying to install a math game and the tablet is acting like you’re smuggling in contraband. Look for:
- Settings > Parental Controls.
- Child profile content settings.
- App approval settings.
- Age or content restrictions.
- Screen time or purchase restrictions.
If a child profile is active, switch to the adult profile and try installing the app there.
Update Fire OS
Older Fire OS software can cause app compatibility or Appstore issues.
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Plug in the tablet if the battery is low.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device Options or Device & Software.
- Tap System Updates.
- Install any available update.
After the update finishes, restart the tablet and try the app again.
Clear the Appstore cache
If the Appstore itself is stuck, clearing temporary files can help.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps & Notifications.
- Tap Manage All Applications.
- Choose Amazon Appstore.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear Cache.
- Restart the tablet.
Avoid clearing app data unless you’re prepared to sign back in or reset Appstore settings. Cache is the gentle nudge; data is the “let’s start over” button.
Our article on what cache is and when to clear it explains why this can help when an app gets stuck.
Check app compatibility
Not every app is available for every Fire tablet model or Fire OS version. Some apps may not appear in the Amazon Appstore, and some may fail if the tablet is too old or missing required software support.
If one app won’t install but others work fine, check the app’s details in the Appstore. The issue may be compatibility, not the tablet.
Factory reset only as a last resort
If no apps will install after storage cleanup, restart, Wi-Fi checks, updates, and Appstore troubleshooting, a factory reset may help. Back up important data first.

FAQ
Why are apps stuck pending on my Fire tablet?
Usually, the tablet is low on storage, struggling with Wi-Fi, or the Appstore is stuck. Restart, check storage, and try again.
Why won’t the Amazon Appstore download apps?
The Appstore may need a restart, cache clear, software update, or better Wi-Fi. It may also be blocked by parental controls.
Can parental controls stop Fire tablet app installs?
Yes. Child profiles and parental controls can block downloads, require approval, or limit apps by age rating. Very responsible. Occasionally annoying.
Why can’t I install a specific app on my Fire tablet?
The app may not be compatible with your Fire tablet model, Fire OS version, account region, or profile settings.
Will factory resetting my Fire tablet fix app downloads?
It might, but save it for last. Back up first, then reset only after storage, Wi-Fi, updates, and Appstore fixes fail.
