HP laptop battery not detected? Try these fixes

⚡ Fast fix

  • Check the charger. Make sure your HP laptop is getting power.
  • Try a power reset. This can clear temporary battery detection glitches.
  • Check Device Manager. Windows may need to reinstall the battery driver.
  • Run HP Battery Check. Find out whether the battery is failing or Windows just isn't recognizing it.

Your HP® laptop is plugged in, but Windows insists there's no battery installed. That's concerning, especially when there's definitely one inside.

At Asurion, we've seen this happen because of Windows glitches, failing batteries, and loose internal connections. Here's how we'd figure out what's going on before spending money on a replacement.

Why is your HP laptop battery not detected?

When Windows shows "No battery detected," it may have lost communication with the battery. A driver problem, failing battery, or damaged internal connection could be responsible.

Here's a useful clue: If the laptop runs normally when unplugged, we'd check Windows first. If it shuts off immediately, the battery may not be supplying power.

How to fix an HP laptop that won't detect its battery

Before replacing anything, try these checks to narrow down whether the problem is software or hardware.

1. Check the charger and try a power reset

Make sure the charging cable is secure and the outlet works. If your laptop uses USB-C, confirm the charger provides enough power for your model. If the cable feels loose or charging keeps cutting out, check whether your HP laptop charging port needs repair.

Then try a power reset:

  1. Shut down the laptop and disconnect the charger and accessories.
  2. Remove the battery only if it's designed to be user-removable.
  3. Hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the battery, if removed, and charger, then restart.

If Windows recognizes the battery again, check whether it charges normally.

2. Reinstall the battery driver

Sometimes Windows loses communication with the battery even though the hardware is fine.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Batteries.
  3. Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, if listed.
  4. Select Uninstall device, then restart.

Windows should reinstall the driver automatically. If the battery still doesn't appear, we'd move on to testing it.

3. Run HP Battery Check

HP's built-in diagnostics can help determine whether the battery needs replacing.

  1. Shut down the laptop.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  4. Select Component Tests > Power > Battery, if available.
  5. Run the test and review the results.

If the test reports Replace, Failure, or No Battery, save the result. A missing battery may indicate a connection or hardware problem, not necessarily a battery that needs replacing.

For more help, see our guides to running HP hardware diagnostics and checking your HP laptop's battery health.

4. Check for Windows and HP updates

If the battery passes diagnostics but Windows still can't detect it, check Settings > Windows Update for available updates. You can also use HP Support Assistant to check for recommended drivers for your model.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

Why does my HP laptop say no battery detected?

A driver glitch, failed battery, or damaged internal connection could be responsible. Start with a power reset, then run HP Battery Check.

How do I reset my HP laptop battery?

Shut down the laptop, disconnect power, and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. Reconnect the charger and restart. This won't erase your files.

Can I use my HP laptop if the battery isn't detected?

Some models can run directly from the charger, but they'll shut down if power is disconnected. Save your work frequently until the problem is fixed.

How do I know if my HP laptop battery needs replacing?

Run HP Battery Check. A failed test, unexpected shutdowns, or an inability to hold a charge may indicate that replacement is needed.
