📌 Note: Installing an SSD in your PS5 isn’t the hardest console upgrade out there, but it’s also not completely beginner-proof. If you’re not comfortable taking apart electronics—or just don’t want to risk turning a storage upgrade into a repair bill—you don’t have to go it alone. Remove the PS5 cover and access the SSD slot
Start by powering your PS5 down and removing its cables. Take the console to a bright room and place it on a table. Have a #1 Phillips screwdriver available.
Follow these steps in our PS5 installation guide to remove the cover:
- Check the model number on your PS5 on the bottom of the console.
- Place the console on a flat surface.
- CFI-1000 model: Remove the base of the PS5 and position the console so the PlayStation logo faces down and the Power button is towards you.
- Remove the cover.
- CFI-2000/7000 model: Take off the triangle cover.
- CFI-1000 model: Pull the top left corner up and toward your right, then slide it off.
- Locate the expansion slot cover and remove its screws.
- CFI-2000/7000 model: Use your screwdriver to remove the screw and take off the cover.
- CFI-1000 model: Use your screwdriver to remove the screw and take off the cover. Remove the second screw and adjust the spacer to fit the size of your SSD.
Be careful not to force the screws or cover components to avoid console damage.

Install the SSD into your PS5
During this part of our PS5 M.2 SSD setup tutorial, you'll set up the heatsink and install the SSD.
Heatsink placement
If your SSD drive doesn't include a heatsink, apply one separately. Skip this section if you're using an SSD drive with a built-in heatsink.
- Place the first thermal pad in the heatsink tray. Make sure it covers it evenly.
- Place the second thermal pad on the interior cover of the heatsink, making sure it's evenly placed.
- Insert the SSD into the heatsink tray and place the heatsink cover on top. When you press down, it should snap into place.
- Fasten the heatsink using its provided screws.
Secure the SSD in the PS5
Next, you'll insert the SSD into your PS5.
- Hold the edge of the SSD and tilt it diagonally so that it aligns with the notch on the expansion connector. Insert it firmly into your PS5.
- CFI-1000 model: Make sure the SSD drive's circuit board rests on the spacer and doesn't block the cooling structure. Secure the SSD using its screw.
- Attach the expansion slot cover and secure it with its screw.
- Reattach the console cover.
Format the SSD and manage storage settings
When you restart your PS5, it automatically formats the new SSD drive and runs a speed test. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the process before attempting to use your console.
If you plan to use your SSD as your default installation location, update your storage settings. Take these steps:
- Navigate to Settings.
- Select Storage > Installation Location.
- Select your SSD drive.
You can move previously installed games to your SSD drive. To do so, follow these steps:
- Navigate to your games home.
- Select Game Library.
- Highlight the game you want to move. Press the Options button and select Move Games and Apps.
- Check the boxes for any other games you want to transfer and select Move.
What to do if your PS5 doesn't recognize the SSD
Check your SSD packaging to make sure you're using a compatible drive, and that you've installed a heatsink if one wasn't included. Keep in mind that M.2 SATA SSDs won't work with the PS5.
If your drive is supported, recheck the installation and make sure the SSD is securely attached. The PS5 may not recognize the drive if it's not firmly inserted.
You can also try updating your system software. Outdated software may conflict with the SSD.
If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.
