When is the best time to buy a new TV?

Man shopping for a new tv

You're looking to round out your dream living room, and you've had your eye on the Samsung® The Frame® TV. The only problem: It doesn't fit your budget. You go online to check for a sale, only to realize you've just missed one. What should you do? Do you wait another year to upgrade? Do you DIY a frame TV of your own?

It can be hard to figure out when's the best time to buy a TV, but we've got your back. At Asurion, we make tech easy. From fixing your devices to showing you how to get the most out of your gadgets—we've got you covered. Here's our guide to when TVs go on sale and when's the best time to buy one.

When is the best time to buy a TV?

There isn't one single “best time” to buy a TV. But there are some prime times spread out throughout the year that often offer deep discounts. We'll walk you through them.

Black Friday

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, and it's when major retailers typically have huge sales on electronics, including TVs. Back in the day, you may have gone to your local mall and braved huge lines to be the first to get your hands on the latest Nintendo® gaming system—or maybe you just watched others do it on local news.

Either way, those lines are still a thing, and although some Black Friday discounts are available online, if you want to avoid the crowds, you may want to wait a few days for Cyber Monday.

Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday is an extension of Black Friday sales, and it's one of the best times to buy electronics—including TVs—online. Want to make sure you pounce on a sale? Get on the email lists for your favorite stores about a month in advance.

Amazon Prime Day

For two days every summer—usually in July—Amazon slashes the original price on just about everything on its website for members of its Prime subscription service. Between the standard discounted items and flash sales, you're bound to get a deal, especially on tech, even that frame TV that's been sitting in your cart.

Major holiday weekends

You'll also discover good deals on TVs during holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day, and President's Day as stores and online retailers offer big sales. The discounts you'll find aren't as great as the traditional holiday season, but they're still good times to buy a TV.

The National Football League Championship

You'd be surprised how many people need a new TV before the big game, which is one of the biggest televised events of the year.

Stores know to park the biggest, baddest, 4K smart TV right next to the tortilla chips and carefully curated soda-can wall. You might not see the same deeper discounts as around the holidays, but these sales are certainly decent deals.

New TV releases

One of the best kept secrets about TV sales is that when manufacturers plan to release a new product in the spring, stores tend to drop their prices for the previous model. This is the perfect time to buy the TV that's been waiting in your digital cart.

TV buying tips

Now that we know when is the best time to buy, here are some helpful tips for how to go about it.

Shop around

You'll want to do your homework. Head to online stores, like Amazon or Best Buy, and compare multiple items at once. Write down your favorite extra features, like 4k and streaming services, and the price range you're looking for. Don't forget to make sure your new TV is compatible with your other smart devices.

And remember to use the customer reviews on those sites to your advantage. They'll tell you way more than a salesperson at a store or someone promoting a product on social media.

Visit a store

Before you click that “buy” button online, take a seat on one of those home theater setups at your favorite big box store. Imagine yourself at home and how that new TV will fit there. If you're not sure how to measure that, check out our guide to how to choose the right TV screen size for you and get a feel for how big a TV you need.

Look for a price match guarantee.

Everyone loves a deal, right? What if we said you could get a better one if you just asked for it? We don't mean running to your nearest store and demanding a bigger sale. We mean going to that store with a photo, coupon, or flyer from a competitor with a lower price for the TV and asking if they have a price matching policy.

This can be helpful in places like Target® or Best Buy® where you might have a rewards card. They may have the TV you want, but it may be cheaper somewhere else. Asking for a price match gets you your dream TV at a better price with any rewards points added on top. What's not to like?

Don't forget about a warranty

Most TVs come with their own manufacturer's warranty. Typically, a warranty can last between 90 days to a year. But that hardly covers all the things a TV might run into—or things that might run into it.
