Top Tech Gifts According to the Experts

Lists of this season’s hottest tech gift are populating television, magazines, and the Internet. Across the country, 42 million people turn to Asurion’s Soluto experts for tech support. So we turned to them to ask what devices they thought were the hottest this holiday.

Should some of these items make their way to you this holiday season, and you are enrolled in your wireless carrier’s support and protection program, reach out to us. We will help you get it all setup and show you how to get the most out of your new technology.

Devices For The Greener Good

Vincent Phamvan is Asurion’s senior director of innovation, and came to Nashville by way to California {go, UCLA Bruins!}. Two things Vincent loves: taking “foodcations” and playing Super Mario Bros. 3 on the classic Nintendo Entertainment System.

Amazon Echo Dot (2nd Generation)

Why you love it: For $50, this is a steal! It takes the best of Amazon Alexa and packs it into a small size that’s compatible with my current Sonos speakers. With the Echo Dot, I can control my Nest thermostats, play music and even turn on my porch light through Lutron Caseta light switches.

Rachio Smart Wi-Fi Sprinkler Controller

Why you love it: I care about the environment, so I love that I can turn off the thermostat when I’m not around or stop my sprinklers from overwatering the lawn. The Rachio lets you control your sprinklers from your phone, but it’s also fully programmable to water each area of your yard based on plants, soil and sun exposure, and it monitors weather stations for rain to ensure you don’t overwater.

New Technology That Adds Connectivity

Christopher Oye is a technical writer for Asurion. He’s particularly passionate about building and creating things, mostly out of Legos. On the weekends, you can find him rooting for the Chicago Bulls and Cubs.

Google OnHub

Why you love it: I have a ton of connected devices that rely on strong wireless connection, so this dual-band router is key. With the Google Hub, I can provide a strong and reliable connection to my connected home products, such as my Phillips Hue lighting or Nest, right from my phone. The coolest part is that I’m able to stream movies from my Surface Book or Airplay it to my TV from my iPhone without the buffer.

Apple Watch Series

Why you love it:  I was waiting for the Series 2 solely because of the GPS feature. But then they added the waterproof element. Not only does it make it easier to track my exercise, I can also control the smart, connected gadgets in my home from the Apple Watch. Do I need to dim the lights or turn down the living room temperature? Just ask Siri. I’m sold!

Gadgets That Are Just Plain Cool

Erica Johnson is a junior instructional designer. She stays up-to-date on the latest tech trends and is particularly interested in conspiracy theories.

Xbox One S

Why you love it: I know there’s going to be a new one next year, but I am a gamer looking for space. The 2TB model is too good to resist!

Nanoleaf Aurora

Why you love it: These modular smart lighting panels are beautiful! The triangular, color-changing LED light panels can connect to your Android or iOS device. It’s amazing that you can make custom shapes and light patterns.

Shiny, Connected And Practical

Brandon Bogle is a manager of research and content for Asurion. He’s an avid video gamer and passionate Star Wars fan. He even named his two dogs Obi Wan Kenobi and Mara Jade.

Sony UHD 4K Smart TV

Why you love it: All of Sony’s Bravia UHD TVs are built on Android TV, which means I can cast virtually anything from my Nexus 5X. I can also use Google-powered voice recognition to answer questions. Best of all, there’s no need for an HDMI slot to be occupied by a Google Cast (formerly Chromecast).

Google Home

Why you love it:

I’m heavily steeped in Google’s services, so a device with the Echo’s capabilities made by Google makes for a no-brainer decision.

Tech To Take Gaming To The Next Level

Tash Turner Fox is a Certified ScrumMaster. She loves reading about tech and gadgets. She adores anything that she can buy in the color pink. If she had it her way, all of her smart home appliances would be hot pink, topped off with a hot pink 70-inch flat screen smart T.V.

Apple TV (4th Generation)

Why you love it: I own an Apple TV, but it’s the 2nd generation, so I’m missing out on some of the amazing new features like paring Bluetooth speakers or headphones to the device. The new Siri remote also lets you use your voice to open apps and search for content by title, genre or even actor! If you’re like me, you will lose the remote within days, so it’s a good thing I can control it all from my iPhone and iPad.

HTC Vive

Why you love it: The HTC Vive is virtual reality at its finest. There are quite a few VR headsets on the market now, but I really like this one. It creates a full body experience since you’re using a headset and two wireless controllers for each hand. Depending on the game you’re playing, it can even double as a workout! Especially if the game involves zombies.

The Technology Of The Future

Han Kim is a social media analyst and technologist who pulls for the Tennessee Titans. In his spare time, Han enjoys writing songs.

Microsoft Hololens

Why you love it: Holographic computing, what could be more futuristic? The retail version looks like it will be a monitor replacement, and it’s as close to a mixed-reality hologram as someone can (can’t yet) get.

Amazon Echo Dot

Why you love it: The Amazon Echo Dot is a smaller, more affordable version of the Amazon Echo. It’s a hands-free voice-controlled device that uses Alexa to play music and control smart home devices from lights and fans to Nest thermostats and garage doors. The Echo Dot can hear you from across the room with its seven far-field microphones.
