7 most common Google Pixel issues and how to fix them

Person holding Google Pixel having problems

Google Pixel™ devices offer incredible cameras, clean software, and smart AI capabilities. However, like any smartphone, they aren't completely immune to glitches. From minor screen lags to speaker bugs, most common performance hiccups can be addressed with simple software tweaks.

At Asurion, we know phone repairs inside and out. Here is our expert guide on how to troubleshoot and fix seven common Google Pixel issues.

1. Battery draining too fast or slow charging

If your Pixel's battery is bleeding power or taking hours to reach 100%, background power configuration, bugs are usually the culprit.

🛠️ The fixes:

  • Turn on Adaptive Battery: Go to Settings > Battery > Adaptive preferences and ensure Adaptive Battery is switched on. This allows the system to limit background power allocation for apps you rarely use.
  • Use the right charger: We often see charging issues being caused by cheap chargers—they are not all created equal. We recommend using a high-quality USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger. Modern Pixels support up to 45W charging inputs—using an old 5W or 10W brick will cause charging speeds to stall significantly.

2. Unresponsive or flickering screen

If your Pixel display freezes up, drops touch registration, or jitters unexpectedly while scrolling, a system cache stall is likely happening. Don't worry—it's probably not dead yet, it just needs to be revived.

🛠️ The fixes:

  • Force a restart: If the touchscreen won't register your finger, force the device to shut down. Press and hold both the physical Power and Volume Up buttons simultaneously for roughly 10 seconds until the screen cuts to black and the Google "G" logo appears.
  • Check for system updates: Go to Settings > System > System update > Check for update to clear out known display-flicker firmware bugs.

If these fixes don't work, you could be facing a hardware issue—turn to an expert for a screen diagnostic.

3. Fingerprint sensor errors

Fingerprint sensors are convenient—until they stop recognizing your finger. If your Pixel suddenly struggles to unlock, a screen protector, dirty display, dry fingers, or a software issue could be to blame.

🛠️ The fixes:

  • Enable Screen Protector Mode: Go to Settings > Display, scroll down, and toggle on Screen protector mode. This increases the display's touch sensitivity to scan through glass layers.
  • Re-register your prints: Delete your old biometric templates via Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Fingerprint Unlock. Re-enroll your finger, pressing firmly and registering the edges at multiple angles.

4. Blurry photos or Camera app crashes

There are a few Pixel camera problems you might run into when you're trying to take photos or shoot video. Most are easy to fix.

🛠️ The fixes:

  • Clear the Camera cache: Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps > Camera > Storage & cache. Tap Clear cache to purge corrupted image runtime files without deleting your saved camera roll.
  • Test in Safe Mode: If the camera crashes continuously, press and hold the Power + Volume Up buttons, then long-press the on-screen Power off button until a "Reboot to Safe Mode" prompt pops up. If the camera functions fine in Safe Mode, a third-party app (like Snapchat or Instagram) is causing the software system crash.

5. Muffled audio or low speaker volume

If videos suddenly sound tinny, phone calls are harder to hear, or your Pixel just isn't as loud as it used to be, you're probably dealing with one of two things: a software hiccup or debris blocking the speakers.

🛠️ The fixes:

  • Reset your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings: Sometimes your phone gets stuck trying to route audio through an old Bluetooth connection. Go to Settings > System > Reset options and choose Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. You'll need to reconnect your Bluetooth devices afterward, but it can clear up stubborn audio issues.
  • Clean the speaker openings: Phones pick up more pocket lint and dust than most people realize. Use a clean, dry, soft-bristled toothbrush to gently brush around the speaker grilles. Even a small amount of debris can make your speakers sound quieter or muffled.

6. Screen auto-rotate stopped working

You turn your phone sideways to watch a video... and nothing happens. If your Pixel refuses to leave portrait mode, it's usually a settings glitch or a sensor that needs a quick reset.

🛠️ The fixes:

  • Turn Auto-rotate off and back on: Swipe down from the top of the screen twice to open Quick Settings. Turn Auto-rotate off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. Sometimes that's all it takes.
  • Give the sensors a reset: It sounds strange, but it can work. Hold your phone securely and gently tap one corner against the palm of your hand a few times. If the motion sensor is stuck, this can sometimes get it responding again.

If your screen still won't rotate after that, try restarting your phone before moving on to more advanced troubleshooting.

7. Calls keep dropping or your cellular signal disappears

Few things are more frustrating than watching your signal bars disappear right when you need them. If your Pixel keeps dropping calls, losing data, or showing an exclamation mark next to the signal indicator, the issue may be with how your phone is connecting to your carrier.

🛠️ The fixes:

  • Refresh your cellular connection: Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, turn your active SIM off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it back on. This forces your phone to reconnect to nearby cell towers.
  • Reset your carrier settings: Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Access Point Names. Tap the three-dot menu and choose Reset to default. This restores your carrier's recommended connection settings and can fix data and calling issues.

If you're still losing service after that, try restarting your phone. Sometimes a quick reboot is all it takes to get things talking again.
