What model is my phone? Here’s how to find out

Woman finding what model phone she has

When your smartphone is working perfectly, you don’t think about what model you have. But when there’s a glitch, like when your iPhone® suddenly freezes or your Android™ needs a new battery, you may ask yourself, “what model is my phone?”

Don’t worry, it’s simple. Asurion Experts fix your favorite devices and help with all your tech needs. We’ll show you how to tell what type of phone you have.

What is a model number on your phone?

The model number on your mobile device identifies what type of phone you have, whether it’s a Samsung Galaxy® S23 Ultra or an iPhone SE 2nd generation.

Here are a few examples of when you may need to know your phone’s model number:

How to check the model number on Android devices

“What Android phone model do I have, anyway?”

If you’ve ever asked yourself this question, we get it. Many different companies such as Samsung® and Google® make Android phones, and each manufacturer has its own process for updating its devices, which can be confusing. Here are a few ways to find the exact model number on your Android phone:

Check the back of your device

The model number is printed on the back of some Android phones. You’ll have to remove your case to check. If you don’t see the model number, check under the removable battery. You may find it there.

Check Settings

  1. On your Android phone, go to Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap About Phone or About Device > Model.

Check the packaging

The box your phone came in or the documents that came with it—if you still have them—will have the model number printed on them.

Check your purchase history

If you have the receipt from when you bought your phone, or if you can obtain one online or in the store, you’ll find the model number there.

How to check the model number of your iPhone

Want to see which model iPhone you have? Here’s how:

Check the back of your iPhone

You can find the model number of some iPhones—mostly older models— etched on the back of the device.

Check Settings

Open Settings and tap General > About. Your iPhone’s model name and number are listed there.

Check the box

The box your phone came in or the documents that came with it will include the model number.

Check your receipt

You can also find the model number on the receipt you got when you bought your phone. Or, you can get a copy online or from the Apple® store.
